One of the world’s favourites among alternative breakfast foods, muesli, today comes in all shapes and sizes: boxed, bagged, pre-cooked, fortified, and frequently with ingredients that are as far removed from the original as chop suey is from Chinese cuisine.

Here are 3 facts about muesli:

  1. Muesli was originally not intended as breakfast but as a light evening meal.
  2. Muesli was “whole food” not because the oats were unprocessed but because apples were grated into the dish whole, skin, pips and all.
  3. In Switzerland, it’s actually not called Muesli, which there refers to a cute little mouse, but Müesli (with ‘ü’ and ‘e’  pronounced separately) referring to the mixture of ingredients that has taken the world by storm.
